A Lack of Trust or a Lack of Honor? The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) situation (please see “Chiropractic Unity Betrayed?” on the front page of this issue) brings several issues to light about the ability of our chiropractic organizations to work together, trust is one of those issues. While the answer is obvious (a lack of trust), it underscores the basic deficit that is holding the chiropractic profession down politically. The ACC didnt feel comfortable taking their “word” for it. The ACC wanted it in writing, but even that failed.
In 1935, the Committee on Educational Standards was formed, the result of a joint effort by the National Chiropractic Association and the Council on State Examining Boards. Shortly after this committee was formed, it began to evaluate chiropractic schools, with the intent that all chiropractic education essentially become equal by meeting specific educational standards.The Committee on Educational Standards later became the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE), and the fight continued - between those who wanted improved educational standards and those who did not. The straight schools fought the introduction of the 4,000-hour curriculum, just as they fought the introduction of the first professional degree and its requirement for two years of undergraduate education as a prerequisite to the chiropractic degree program.Through the years, the majority prevailed and eventually, in 1974, the CCE became recognized by the U.S. Office of Education (now the U.S. Department of Education) as the accrediting agency for the chiropractic profession.

UN passes declaration favoring human cloning banThe United Nations recently passed a declaration opposing all forms of human cloning as “incompatible with human dignity.” This declaration was supported by the United States and led by Costa Rica. Could this mean Asda is scaling down its expansion plans? Such news would spread some cheer among independent town centre stores, but seems unlikely. Friends of the Earth wants the impact of traffic generation and impact on town centre stores of large scale out-of-town expansion to be properly assessed through the democratic planning process, not decided by Asda or any other retailer. If the government does not close this gaping loophole in planning law then its recent promise to regenerate all our town and city centres sounds very hollow indeed.

Communications media networks were born with the 1926 radio sign-on of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) signaling the dawn of a new era of both communications and culture in America. The network concept is purely abstract–even in its practical form nothing but a series of wires or satellite connections. Yet the history and influence of the broadcast networks is one of the great stories of the twentieth century for though they did not create it the networks did cement the process of homogenizing American culture. By 1930 for the first time America was whistling to the same tunes laughing at the same comedians hearing the same politicians speeches–instantaneously. The taste and judgement of a relative few urban Northeastern network executives set national standards of everything from dialect and language to fashion and behavior. Only when the influence of the old-line networks had faded by the end of the century was it truly possible to grasp the power they held over the nation for so long.Though the number of networks has grown exponentially over the decades with the technology of their distribution methods improving by light-years the concept has remained the same. A network is simply a set of affiliate stations that receive programming from one central source then beam that programming by some method either broadcast wave or cable wire into the eyes and ears of a waiting public.

For most of this century aluminium was mainly used by the construction industry in a supporting role, as the frames for modern windows. All this is changed as younger architects emerged from behind the closed doors where they spent most of the Eighties doing interior design, and started to build new houses and office blocks. Instead of cubes supporting roofs on beams and columns in the traditional method of construction, this younger generation saw the potential for shaping pods, or shells, in the same way that Future Systems did for their NatWest Media Centre at Lords cricket ground. However, not everything has been designed as an egg - or a Teletubby. Allies Morrison put the fun back into functional with their use of fins that extrude from the glass facade of an extension at Goldsmiths College: these make for a dramatic entrance, and one which shelters the computer screens within from too much daylight. Roofs that unfurl like waves are used in very different ways by Chris Wilkinson at the Stratford Regional Station, and by Sir Norman Foster at the bus terminus in Greenwich, while Penoyre and Prasad made a decorative feature of the properties of unadorned aluminium in their timbered visitors centre at Dagenham, contrasting the materials to dramatic effect. As the century draws to a close there has been a lot of speculation about houses of the future. Will they have plasma walls that beam out works of art at the flick of a mouse? Or will they sport straw-baled walls, as sustainable architects would have us believe? “If you want to find out the building material of the future you had better go to the fairground,” says the French architect, Jean Nouvel. His Arab Institute in Paris has an ingenious facade, with light controlled by aluminium screens that operate like camera lenses: a hidden mechanism widens the aperture when the light is dim and narrows it at noon on a sunny day, controlling the intensity of light within. But Future Systems, which won the top award in the 1999 Aluminium Imagination Architectural Awards with a unanimous vote from the judges for their NatWest Media Centre at Lords, was not shy about predictions for aluminium as the building material of the future. It placed a piece of rolled aluminium on a stand at Interbuild in 1997 to make the point. Naturally, in the competitive world of architecture, there are vociferous detractors who point out that aluminium takes much more energy to smelt - producing powerful global warming gases - than steel. However, Friends of the Earth give it the green light because of its recyclable qualities. Aluminium is one metal which is recyclable without diminishing the strength of the product. So if you melt down all those aluminium frames from windows to make another batch in a different shape, they will be just as strong as the originals. And the UK aluminium industry has invested in new technology to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and per-fluoro carbons (PFCs) in the production of primary aluminium. Aluminium is light but strong and can be cast, rolled and extruded into complex shapes, so it is hardly surprising that, year on year, submissions to the Aluminium Imagination Architectural Awards have grown. This year Paul Finch, the editor of the Architects Journal and a regular judge at the awards, observed that competition entries were the highest standard yet seen. Impressed by the versatility and ingenuity of the contestants, judges chairman Richard Hordern said he was pleased that younger, less well-established teams, as well as the big names, had submitted designs. This year a new award was introduced by Architects Journal for the most innovative use of aluminium in a European building outside the UK by a British practice. INTRODUCTION Stability and impressive growth rates have been the key Armenian economic characteristics of recent years (see Table 1). The Central Bank of Armenia (CBA), the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE), and the private banking sector all recognize the need for improved mortgage finance services to augment this demand. They see the commercial and development opportunities that development of mortgage lending entails. In recent months there has been an impressive degree of discussion and planning about how to undertake this improvement, as evidenced by the frequent articles in the news media on trends and development and the preparation of concept papers by the CBA and MoFE. This is the appropriate time, therefore, for a systematic analysis of how private mortgage lending can develop in Armenia. This article summarizes the results of such an analysis. The analysis was prepared as the response of KfW (Kreditanstalt fuer Wiederaufbau) to a request from the Government of Armenia to develop the concept for mortgage market development, building on the work already done by Armenian experts.

There are around 3,000 “life coaches” in America, and numbers are rising. Even so, coaches in the States are still waiting for the day when people stop saying, “What is life-coaching?” and ask, “Who is your coach?” A coach is a hybrid of business advisor, mentor, therapist, counsellor - and grandma, who thinks youre perfect and wants you to be happy. Ive worked with counsellors for years, writing about their work. I admire it enormously, but whats exciting about coaching is the directness. Coaches instead are straight-talking (but always positive), and will say what strikes them as the truth from the first session. Coaching is achievement- focused. Coaches are trained to handle anything but they tend to specialise in certain professions or life situations. It can be surprising. FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.
Health Alliance Medical Plans last month announced its coverage of two over-the-counter drugs formerly available by prescription only: Wyeths Alavert and Procter Gambles Prilosec OTC. Health Alliance will require members who have prescription drug benefits to obtain a written prescription from their physicians for the new over-the-counter drugs in order to receive coverage. The news at Health Alliance follows Medco Health Solutions expansion of its Generics First program in June to include Wyeths analgesic Advil and allergy remedy Alavert.
“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. Every brick building has windows and windowsills. Well-built windowsills are rarely thought of since they do their job–primarily to deflect rainwater from the window–quietly. Decorative sills are also available and can be a focal point in a variety of architectural styles. The majority of brick windowsills are built of brick rowlocks. Uncored brick at the ends of the sill look better than exposed core holes. Uncored brick also can be laid as headers. Special shapes–such as those in the photo–are used as windowsills to enhance a buildings appearance. All brick sills should be sloped so that rain is easily directed away from the window. A minimum slope of 3/4 inch, or 15 degrees, is recommended, Coursing should be laid out so that at least 4 3/8 inches are allowed from the top of the brickwork below the sill to the bottom of the window unit when using modular size brick. Gradually all observances became centered around the date December 25 with traditions becoming mixed and accepted between different ethnic backgrounds.
